Permanent Extension Cords: Why They're a Fire Hazard (and the Code-Compliant Fix)

Using extension cords as permanent wiring violates the National Electrical Code and causes home fires every year in Los Angeles. Here's what the NEC actually says and how to fix it safely.

Permanent Extension Cords: Why They''re a Fire Hazard (and the Code-Compliant Fix)

If you''ve got an extension cord running behind furniture, snaked through a wall, tucked under a rug, or stapled along a baseboard powering a TV, mini-split, garage fridge, or EV charger — you have a code violation and a real fire risk in your home. This is one of the most common issues we see on service calls across Los Angeles, from older bungalows in Highland Park to new builds in the Valley.

Extension cords are designed for temporary use only. The moment they become the everyday power source for an appliance, they''re operating outside what the National Electrical Code (NEC) allows — and outside what their insulation, gauge, and connectors were engineered to handle.

What the NEC actually says

The National Electrical Code is explicit. NEC 400.12 prohibits the use of flexible cords and cables as:

  • A substitute for the fixed wiring of a structure
  • Run through holes in walls, ceilings, or floors
  • Run through doorways, windows, or similar openings
  • Attached to building surfaces (except with listed cord fittings)
  • Concealed by walls, floors, ceilings, or located above suspended/dropped ceilings
  • Installed in raceways (except where specifically permitted)

If your extension cord is doing any of those things, it''s no longer "temporary." It''s functioning as permanent wiring — and that''s what the code forbids.

How long is "temporary"? The NEC and OSHA generally treat 90 days as the outer edge of temporary use. If a cord has been powering the same appliance for months, it''s permanent by any practical definition.

Why permanent extension cords cause fires

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and NFPA data are consistent year after year: extension cords are responsible for roughly 3,300 residential fires annually, causing dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries. Here''s why:

1. Wire gauge is too small for continuous loads

A typical 16-gauge household extension cord is rated for about 13 amps over short distances. Run it 25–50 feet, add a space heater or window AC (12–15 amps continuous), and the conductor heats up. Heat degrades the insulation. Eventually you get arcing or a plastic-melt fire.

2. Connectors weren''t built for permanent stress

Wall-outlet blades and cord plugs use spring tension to make contact. Over months and years — especially when tugged, kinked, or run under a rug — that contact loosens. Loose contacts create resistance, resistance creates heat, and heat starts fires at the plug face. This is exactly why so many extension cord fires start at the outlet.

3. No overcurrent protection near the load

Your home''s breaker sits at the panel, potentially 40+ feet from the appliance. A partial short or arcing fault in a long cord can generate enough heat to ignite carpet, drywall, or stored items long before the breaker trips.

4. Cords under rugs and behind furniture can''t dissipate heat

Extension cord insulation depends on air circulation to shed heat. Cover it with a rug, pin it behind a couch, or bundle it in a coil, and normal operating temperature climbs into failure territory.

5. Daisy-chained cords and cheap power strips multiply the risk

Plugging one extension cord into another, or stacking multiple power strips, exceeds the rated ampacity of the weakest link. This is a leading cause of garage and home-office fires.

Common scenarios we see in Los Angeles homes

  • Garage refrigerators or freezers powered by a cord from inside the house
  • Mini-split condensers on a patio fed by an outdoor cord through a window frame
  • EV chargers running off a heavy-gauge cord from a laundry room outlet
  • Bedroom TVs, computers, or AC units on a cord snaked behind drywall or through an attic
  • Detached ADUs, sheds, or workshops powered by cords buried in a shallow trench
  • Christmas lights or landscape lighting left up (and plugged in) year-round

Every one of those situations violates NEC 400.12 and every one is a fire waiting to happen.

The code-compliant fix

The solution is almost always the same: replace the extension cord with a permanent, dedicated circuit installed by a licensed electrician. Depending on the situation, that means:

A new dedicated 15A or 20A circuit

For a garage fridge, home-office equipment, a window AC, or a wall-mounted TV in a room that''s short on outlets, a licensed electrician runs proper Romex (NM-B) or conduit from your panel to a new receptacle rated for the load. No cord, no daisy-chain, no fire risk.

A dedicated 240V circuit for large appliances

Mini-splits, EV chargers, tankless water heaters, and dryers all need their own 240V circuit sized to the manufacturer''s spec — typically 20A, 30A, 40A, or 50A. Feeding these off any extension cord is dangerous and voids the appliance warranty.

Outdoor / detached-building wiring

Power to a shed, workshop, ADU, or patio has to be run in listed outdoor conduit or direct-burial cable at code-required depth, terminating in weather-resistant, in-use covered receptacles. Extension cords across a yard fail on both safety and code.

A panel upgrade if you''re out of capacity

If your panel is full or already at capacity, adding more circuits isn''t possible without a panel upgrade — usually to 200 amps for a modern home. Older Federal Pacific, Zinsco, and Pushmatic panels should be replaced regardless; they''re a separate fire hazard we cover in this guide.

What to do this week

  1. Walk your house and identify every extension cord in use for more than 30 days. Include the garage, patio, attic, and any detached buildings.
  2. Note what''s plugged into each one and how many amps it draws. Anything over 8–10 amps continuous is high priority.
  3. Unplug anything running under a rug, through a wall, or in a concealed space today. That is the most immediate fire risk.
  4. Schedule a licensed electrician to install proper circuits where you need permanent power.
