Level 1 vs Level 2 — and why almost everyone ends up at Level 2

Level 1 is the cord that comes with the car. Plug it into a regular 120V outlet and you'll add about 3–5 miles of range per hour. Fine for a plug-in hybrid or a very short commute. Painful for anything else.

Level 2 runs on a dedicated 240V circuit — the same voltage as an electric dryer or range — and adds 20–40+ miles of range per hour depending on the charger and the vehicle. In practice, a Level 2 charger turns your driveway into a "wake up with a full battery" machine.

What decides the install

Three things dictate what your installation actually looks like:

  1. Charger amperage. Common home chargers are 32A, 40A, or 48A. A 48A charger needs a 60A circuit and heavier wire — meaningfully more expensive.
  2. Distance from the panel. A charger 6 feet from the panel is a straightforward job. One 80 feet away, through finished walls, is a very different job.
  3. Panel capacity. Your existing panel has to have room, both physically (an open slot) and electrically (available load). Older 100-amp panels frequently don't.

Do you need a panel upgrade?

Sometimes. A licensed electrician will run a NEC load calculation to see if your existing service can safely carry the new circuit. If it can't, options include:

  • Upgrading the panel/service to 200 amps (usually the right long-term move if the panel is also old)
  • Installing a load-management device that pauses the charger when other loads are running
  • Downsizing to a lower-amperage charger

Permits and inspection

EV charger installations in Los Angeles require an electrical permit and inspection. That's good news — it means your work is on record for insurance and resale, and someone independent has verified it's safe. Beware of quotes that promise "no permit needed."

Rebates worth knowing about

  • LADWP offers rebates for qualifying Level 2 charger installations for residential customers
  • SoCal Edison has its own charger rebate program in its service area
  • Federal tax credit (30% of installation cost, up to $1,000) is currently available for home EV charger installs
